COURSE AND NEW CLUBHOUSE NEWS

Form work is currently being erected on the western ground floor slab that was poured last week. This is for a small slab that will form part of the roof of the club. A solid slab is required to house various plant equipment. On the lower ground lever, the remaining slab for the pro-shop was poured on Saturday. This now show the actual footprint of the lower ground floor, and from the new 18th green players can start to get an idea of how the pro-shop and clubhouse will look upon completion.
On the eastern side of the course, the surrounds and surface of the new 13th green have been sanded, and shaping has been completed. By mid to late next week we will have the surrounds turfed and this green seeded.
The old 14th green and 2nd greens have been demolished. This area is being reshaped as the fairway of the new 11th hole which will play as a par 5 to the old 15th green. A fairway bunker is currently being shaped on the left side of this fairway which will need to be considered off the tee. The video below shows this the fairway and approach to this green.
The new tee complex for the 12th hole has now also been shaped. This is tucked next to the creek near the old 15th hole, and the aggressive line off the tee will be straight over the top of the old 17th green, which will require a decent carry along with bringing the creek into play. A safer option will be to bail out to the left, which will lead to a substantially longer shot as the hole doglegs right towards the bridge on the old 16th. A number of trees have been cleared from the creek to open up the corridors for these new holes.
UPDATE TO LOCAL RULE
The COLLARS (being the area with 1.4metres of the green) on holes 9,13,14 (new greens) are GUR.
A player may elect to play of this area BUT ONLY WITH A PUTTER. If a player chooses to play a shot with any other club, relief is compulsory.
If a player elects to take relief from the GUR he proceeds under Rule 25.1 (b)
Contravention of a local rule incurs a 2 stroke penalty.

CLICK HERE for the full Conditions and Rules of Play
There have been two amendments made to the Conditions and Rules of Play as recommended by the Match Committee and approved by the board, which should be noted.
- Any player that qualifies for the match play portion of the competition, and is not present and prepared to play at the stipulated time of his Match Play round, will forfeit his match. AND if the player has not furnished an appropriate reason to the Match Committee prior to his non-attendance, he will be made ineligible to compete in this event next year.
- In the interest of fairness (pace of play, similar ability), for the second round of qualifying on the 23rd of September, those members attempting to qualify for the Club Championship will be allocated at tee time at either 7:36, 7:44, 9:36 or 9:44. After the completion of the first round, the Match Committee will conduct a draw of the qualifiers and allocate them to one of the above tee times. Should any player feel that the time allocated by the draw is unreasonable due to work or personal reasons the Match Committee will consider any request in a timely manner.

Pitching To A Short-Sided Pin
Zip through the grass with an open face – Justin Rose (GolfDigest)
Earlier this year I was struggling with my consistency on short shots around the green like you see me hitting here. My contact wasn’t great. Then one day at the Farmers Insurance Open, my coach, Sean Foley, was demo-ing the right way to hit them. He has some tattoos on the inside of his right forearm, and I noticed how they stayed skyward as he swung through the grass. One thing I was doing wrong was rolling my right forearm over too much and shutting the clubface. This was making my contact unpredictable. So when it was time to hit these shots during the tournament, I kept picturing Sean’s tattoos in my mind trying to feel like I was keeping an imaginary tattoo on my right forearm facing up.
One thing I really liked about that imagery was it helped me keep the clubface open and take advantage of the bounce of the sole on my wedge. Wedge shots are a lot easier if you let the club slide along the grass on a shallow angle, rather than chopping down on the ball. The tattoo trick made my swing a little shallower, and I could be a bit more aggressive because I knew contact with the ball was going to be clean.
“The last thing you want to do is chop down on the ball.”
Back to this short-sided shot I had at Torrey. When the pin is close to the edge of the green you’re playing from and you’ve got a little cushion of grass, try to put some zip on the ball to make it stop quickly once it lands. By holding off the rotation of my right arm, I can add some real speed to my swing. The added loft from the open clubface and the extra spin it puts on the ball makes it easier to get it close to the hole. You still need your hands involved with a feel shot like this, but you want them synced with the rotation of your body as you turn toward the target. If you keep those tattoos skyward, you’ll make better contact and have a real chance at getting up and down.
