Invitation to visit our SGC – Archives Room now known as “The Buttenshaw Room”

Posted on: 14 November

Members will recall that the Board decided to form an Archive Group in November 2022 and we met with several members who have a long history with our Club, namely:  Ray Wilson OAM, Niall King OAM, David Martin, Stephen Laurence & Truda Rail were the first to put their hands up to volunteer and soon after Gary Daly, Harry Sofios & Tony Hill [from the Golf Museum] joined up.

Maintaining our wonderful Club history [1897-1907 and re-established in 1931 to today] was not a priority as over the past few years, as we have been busy settling into our new Clubhouse and focusing on the course. During the move from the old Clubhouse to the new Clubhouse many historic items, photos and documents were placed into storage boxes and little work was been done to examine and preserve such history.

Since the Archive Group commenced work they have been opening old dusty boxes, examining the contents, placing items in date order to correctly document our Club’s history. Tony Hill has been of great assistance in creating weekly a range of “Peek at History” articles that were published in Chipshots. In addition, Gary Daly and Harry Sofios have done a magnificent job video interviewing older members of the Club.

Recently, we created an Archive drop down box on our Club web page, so that all Members can view the Videos, Publications & Photos. Also Members will have noted that we now have all our historical Club Honour Board information, available on the Club’s Web Page.

Whilst the above work has been on-going we “took possession” of a Storage Room, located in the north east corner of the Basement Parking level and have turned it into a very presentable Archive Room. At the August Board Meeting a motion was passed, to officially name it “The Buttenshaw Room”.

The Hon E.A. Buttenshaw Esq was our longest serving Club President from 1932 to 1950. In 1933 Buttenshaw was also the NSW Deputy Premier, Minister for the Railways and he was instrumental in the purchase at a public auction of the railway land [50 acres] on the western side and land [6.5 acres] on the eastern side of the Course. The Club paid a total of £1,345 for the 56.5 acres.

The Buttenshaw Room is going to be open on the following dates/times for all Members to visit and inspect the historic items on display. A Member of the Archive Group will be in attendance to answers any questions.
