Rule 9 – Play the Ball as It Lies
With the Match Committee’s decision to remove all preferred lies, golfers are reminded that we now return fully to one of the core principles of the game: play the ball as it lies.
What Rule 9 Means for Your Round
Rule 9 outlines how to proceed when a ball at rest is moved, and it covers when a ball must be played where it lies and when it must be replaced.
Natural Forces
If wind, water, or other natural forces move your ball, it must be played from its new location.
When a Person or Outside Influence Moves the Ball
If a ball is lifted or moved by a player, opponent, or any outside influence, it must be replaced on its original spot.
Take Care Near Any Ball
Accidentally causing your own or another player’s ball to move will usually result in a penalty, except on the putting green.
Key Situations Covered by Rule 9
· Ball moves during your backswing or stroke: play it from its new position.
· Determining what caused a ball to move: natural forces, player, opponent (match play), or outside influence.
· Putting green exceptions: a lifted and replaced ball that moves must be replaced again.
· Ball‑marker movement: if moved, the spot must be re‑marked or the ball replaced.
The Takeaway for Members
With preferred lies removed, protect the ball’s position and avoid unnecessary contact. Play it as it lies — unless the Rules clearly allow otherwise.
