Strathfield Crowned Major Pennants Champions in Classic Final
Posted on: 26 March
Strathfield Golf Club has etched its name into the club’s history books, claiming the 2026 Division 4 Major Pennants title with a thrilling Grand Final victory over Bexley at the majestic NSW Golf Club.
Played on a perfect autumn morning, the Final had all the ingredients of a classic—championship pressure, momentum swings, gritty individual performances, and a single putt that ultimately delivered the pennant. Against a strong and experienced Bexley side, Strathfield showed the depth, resilience, and belief that had defined their season from Round 1.
Early Momentum Sets the Platform
Strathfield got off to an ideal start, with Craig Delaney delivering the first point of the day in emphatic fashion. After finding himself two down mid‑round, Craig mounted a superb fightback, winning five of the next six holes to claim a composed 3 & 2 victory and set the tone for the team.
That momentum was quickly reinforced by Matt Delaney who continued his incredible season with a dominant 5 & 4 victory, once again showcasing the control and consistency that saw him finish the entire pennant campaign undefeated. Matt’s win proved vital in building scoreboard pressure and keeping Strathfield firmly in control of the contest.
Moments later, it was James Roper’s turn, and his match was a tight battle from start to finish. Trailing for much of the round and arriving on the 18th hole all square, James produced a calm and courageous finish. After finding the fairway and then stiffing a wedge close, James buried his birdie putt to claim a dramatic 1‑up win—his first lead of the match and one of the most important putts of the day.
Pressure Mounts, and a Pennant on the Line
As other matches concluded, the overall result tightened dramatically. Despite brave efforts from Victor Chieng, Chris Sarkis, and Lucas Daher, Bexley clawed their way back into the contest, handing Strathfield three narrow defeats that brought the final down to a single match.
That left everything resting on Paul Lee.
True to the intensity of the occasion, Paul’s match never strayed far from all square. After briefly edging ahead mid‑round, the margin tightened as the galleries grew around the par-3 17th hole, with players, caddies, families, and supporters from both clubs lining the green.
With his opponent finding the bunker, Paul played a controlled tee shot safely to the heart of the green. Two putts were all he needed to secure the pennant.
Paul hit a nice putt that tracked straight at the hole but pulls up 3 feet short. Standing over a nervy three‑footer with the entire season on the line, Paul rolled the putt firmly home. The green erupted, and Strathfield Golf Club were officially Major Pennants Champions.
A Season Defined by Depth and Belief
This victory was no accident. It was the culmination of a campaign built on consistency, resilience, and contribution from every player who donned the Strathfield colours throughout the season. Special congratulations go to Matt Delaney and Paul Lee, who both completed the entire preliminary season undefeated, a remarkable achievement at this level.
The club extends its heartfelt thanks to the team’s caddies, families, supporters, board members, and volunteers, whose support—both home and away—helped drive this unforgettable journey. A special acknowledgment must also go to Team Manager Steve Ring, along with assistant managers Gary Daly and Chris Scott, for their tireless work behind the scenes.
This pennant is a shared success—one built on teamwork, trust, and pride in representing Strathfield Golf Club. Congratulations to every player involved in this outstanding achievement.
