COURSE AND NEW CLUBHOUSE NEWS

The builders are focusing much of their efforts on the clubhouse services, especially the Fire Protections system. This involves the completion of the hydrant pump room which also feeds the automatic fire sprinkler system throughout the building. This is one of the key elements which must be completed before we can obtain a certificate of occupancy allowing us to operate from this building. Early this week the main electrical switchboard for the clubhouse was also delivered.

The shaping of the clubhouse surrounds is ongoing, and the sub-base of the new practice putting green is now finished. This is a huge practice green, which will allow members to practice some extremely long putts. Drainage for the surrounds of the practice greens had been completed this week.

On Wednesday turfing commenced around the surrounds of the new 9th green and 18th tees. A lot more turf had been ordered to be laid this week, though due to the wet weather we have been receiving, it has not been possible to get trucks in and out of the area without destroying the new work. The turf deliveries have now been rescheduled and the majority of the new fairway should be turfed next week as long as we have some clear weather.

Currently another ladies tee is being prepared on the new 15th hole. This is located on the southern side of the new bridge.

On Monday and Tuesday this week the golf course was closed for greens renovations. Our remaining old greens, being the old 8th, 11th, 12th & 15th, were cored with a 13mm hollow tyne. Most of the new greens, excluding the new 12th and 13th greens which have just been brought into play, were solid tyned, or spiked, with an 8mm tyne. All of these greens then received a top dressing of sand. This practice is done to aerate the greens which is necessary in maintaining a healthy surface.

As the course was closed it gave the green staff an opportunity to tackle some of the kikuyu growing in the surrounds of the new greens. Kikuyu will be an ongoing problem for a number of years as the seeds can remain dormant for up to 7 years. The treatment of this involves ongoing spot spraying of the affected areas.

Currently this is not easy to do in the surrounds of greens, because the chemical used to eradicate kikuyu can also be harmful to the bent grass on our greens, especially while the greens are still relatively young. Players tracking the chemical onto the greens via their shoes is sometimes enough to cause problems to the putting surface. The greens staff are developing a plan that will allow them to treat the affected areas without risking the quality of our greens.

Over the last week a number of negotiations have taken place with Conquest who have purchased the current clubhouse site. Originally we were required to vacate this property by the 7th of April, but we have been able to reach a positive arrangement with Conquest which will allow us to continue trading from this clubhouse beyond the 7th of April. This will give the clubhouse builders a little bit more time to ensure that once we move to the new site we can operate with as little disruption as possible. We still intend to move to the new site once the lower ground floor is ready and we receive the Certificate of Occupancy for this area. Conquest will be commencing preliminary work from the 9th of April, but we will be working with them to minimise disruption for our members.

Thank you peter & Kay

Our Club caterers Peter and Kay finish up today after 5 ½ years as our club caterers.

During that time they have catered for well over 1000 functions as well as provide food and meals for members at both the clubhouse and halfway house. We have received many, many letters of thanks and commendation from customers for the quality of food and service from Peter and Kay.

Peter has done a great deal for the Club in addition to the normal duties of caterer- not least of which was paying for the painting of the whole clubhouse when he first took over as caterer. Peter also stayed on as caterer after his contract expired last August as he did not want to leave us without catering facilities during the period we waited to move into the new clubhouse and our new caterers Forte took over.

We wish Peter and Kay all the very best for the future and hope to see them both back on the golf course from time to time.

Thank you for a job well done.

No drinks cart on the course

Due to Peter, our caterer, no longer being with the club there will not be a drinks cart on the course during the interim period until we move across to the new clubhouse.

We have organised to have a variety of sandwiches and wraps delivered daily which can be purchased before the round from either the bar or the pro-shop. We apologise for the inconvenience due to the timing of these events. The halfway house at the new clubhouse will be up and running as soon as we are operational from the new site.

Hello All Members,

Although the last match was a dead rubber, Strathfield beat the top seeded Warringah 4 matches to 3, leaving somewhat of a bitter-sweet feeling.

Easy wins to Paul Chilari at No7 and James Roper, who flogged his previously unbeaten opponent of 3 years , 8 and 6 having been 7 up thru 7 and 4 under par at No 2. It got a bit tense after that.

Congrats to both Jack Snelgrove and Jason Fanning who both won 1up.

Strathfield ended the season with a record of 3 wins 2 losses and a draw from our pool matches to finish 2nd in the division, only 1/2 a game behind Warringah who go thru to the Semi-finals. Our finish guarantees us a seeding in next year’s tournament.

May I take this opportunity to thank the caddies. Brad, Danny, Billy, Clint, Kieran and Mark. May I also thank the Board without whose support the Teams participation would not be possible.

It was my privilege to Manager this year’s Team, who represented SGC and the game honourably and showed what Team Spirit means.

This year’s team consisted of;

Dave Aramayo
Paul Chillari
Craig Delaney(c)
Jason Fanning
Matt Kelman
Yongjun Kim
James Roper
Jack Snelgrove
Sean Twomey

Yours In Golf,

Steve Ring
Major Pennants Manager
